For those unfamiliar, which would be the entire population of the planet except for the limited number who grew up in Greenwood, SC, the Dixie is a burger place that has enjoyed local fame as THE place to get a burger for… well, longer than I’ve been alive. read more

Say Boo to Drugs. Heart Attacks Are Okay.

October 23, 2009

23 Oct 2009

Here's a tip for the Uptown Greenwood Development Corporation and GwdToday.com: If you're going to pimp an event that contains the slogan "Say Boo to Drugs", then make sure one of the attractions at the event is not a heart-clogging eating contest.

The Hardees Monster Thickburger contains 215% of the daily recommended intake of saturated fat (the kind of fat that greatly contributes to several different cardiovascular diseases), and they want to see how many you can eat! But, hey, boo to drugs, right?

According to the CDC, heart disease is responsible for nearly one third of all deaths, making it the leading cause of death in the United States. Think about that. Out of all the ways we can come up with to die, heart disease takes more of us down than anything else. Death from drug use is not even in the top 50 of leading causes of death.

How many people were killed by marijuana in the past 12 months? ZERO. Same as the year before, and the year before that, and the year before that, and the year before that, and the year before that, and the year before that, and the year before that, and the year before that, and the year before that, and the year before that, and the year before that, and the year before that. More people died in 2007 from eating spinach than from smoking marijuana.

You know how much marijuana it would take to kill a human? 300 pounds -- but it would have to be dropped from the top of a 10-story building. The point is there has never been a recorded case of death by marijuana consumption in the entire history of the United States.

So, go ahead with your bad self and wolf down those Thickburgers. Just make sure you stay away from those nasty drugs. pfffft.

Note:
I wrote this, not to endorse hard drug use, but to highlight the raging hypocrisy with which we are all too often inundated.

KFC's Original Fried Chicken Recipe

July 24, 2009

Ron Douglas claims to have figured out the recipe for KFC's secret original recipe:

  • 1 teaspoon ground oregano
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground sage
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried marjoram
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 tablespoons paprika
  • 1 teaspoon onion salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons Accent (an MSG-based seasoning)
I'll have to remember to try that some day.

McDonald's and Burger King -- Trans Fat

May 1, 2009

Surprisingly, McDonald's french fries don't contain trans fat, but all their burgers do. Same story for Burger King.

Arby's -- trans fat

Well, I don't eat Arby's roast beef sandwiches any more.  They (along with about half of the rest of the menu, including the large and medium curly fries) contain trans fat.

Chick-fil-A

Chick-fil-A is in the clear as far as trans fat goes.  I only saw one item on their menu that has trans fat (the cheesecake).

Zaxby's -- Trans Fat

Well, I don't eat at Zaxby's any more. Every one of their main course items (and most of their side items) has trans fat (proven to increase risk of heart disease and promotes dangerous cholesterol levels, which is something I don't need).

Supper Illustration

October 12, 2008

Melissa is in Tennessee this weekend, so I told the boys I would cook them something for supper, but they would have to draw it and have me guess. Well, here is what they came up with:

My initial guess was meatballs and pepper, but Will informed me I was way off. So, he scratched that out and gave it another shot. The second time I guessed that he wanted orange boots and ice cubes, but that apparently wasn't right, either.

He was going for macaroni and brown rice. We ended up going to Outback anyway since I'm no brown rice cooker.
