A quick bit of science:
I saw on the History Channel that one of the contributing factors in the Florida Keys' creation was, ironically, an ice age.
Geologists believe that the weight of the ice on the northern part of our continental shelf was so great that it pushed the southern end up out of the water a little bit. That combined with receding shorelines due to glacier formations, and we have land-ho down south.![]()

We flew from Atlanta to Miami, then rented a convertible to drive to Key West. This was all for Mel's 30th birthday, by the way. Oh, and don't ever drive in Miami.
